What happens if you don't pay

We need the money from council tax payments to fund essential services across the city. So, it is important that you pay the money due on your council tax bill when you receive this.

You should contact us if you are struggling to pay or have fallen behind with your payments. We will take prompt action to recover the money you owe.

Should you fall behind on your payments we will send you a reminder to tell you how much is outstanding. If you bring your payments up to date within 7 days you will be able to continue paying by instalments.

The full balance on your bill will become due immediately if;

  • your instalments are not brought up to date
  • you fail to maintain future instalments as detailed on your bill.

We will issue a court summons and apply to Newcastle Magistrates Court for a liability order. The liability order will allow us to enforce payment of the debt. We will add costs of up to £110.00 to your bill, this will enable us to take further enforcement action against you.
