Please take a look at the apprenticeship roles we will have available below before booking a place. 

Newcastle City Council will be hosting an Apprenticeship Recruitment Event on Thursday 18 April 2024, 3pm to 6pm at the City Library. 

You will be able to apply for our apprenticeships at the event and support will be on hand to help complete the application form. Should you want to apply online then the vacancies will be available via Newcastle City Council's jobs listings from the 18 April 2024. 

You can speak to us about the apprentice roles we have available, and we can provide you with more information about the role, the training involved, the application process and answer any questions you have.

Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and over, and we would welcome applications from people of all ages and backgrounds.

Apprentice roles we are recruiting

We will be recruiting a range of apprentice roles, please see details of the vacancies we will have on offer. 

Please note that these are all of our apprenticeship vacancies we have at this time and we will not be recruiting apprentice electricians this year. Salary information will be available at the event and on the online vacancy advert.  

Digital apprenticeships 

Our websites are the main way residents, businesses and visitors to the city interact with the council. Our main corporate website - newcastle.gov.uk - welcomes 2.7 million users a year, who view almost 7.9 million pages.

We must make sure that our websites are useable, sustainable and accessible to all.

You can help us do that through exciting opportunities to join our new website team.

Come along to the event to speak to our Website Manager about becoming a part of our communications team, and register your interest to contacted when the apprenticeships are open for applications. 

Apprentice arborist 

The arboriculture team within Local Services provide a wide range of tree maintenance services across Newcastle City Councils, Open spaces, Highways and Housing. 

You will be carrying out tree work throughout Newcastle. As an apprentice you will be learning on the job whilst being mentored by our qualified experienced staff. You will gain knowledge to enable you to climb trees, prune trees, and fell trees. You will be trained in using a variety of arboricultural plant, climbing equipment, and chainsaws. 

We will support you to achieve a Level 2 apprenticeship Qualification in Arboriculture. We are looking for someone with a keen interest in this profession and is eager to learn. You will need a GCSE grade 9 to 2 (A to E) or equivalent in Maths and English. You must be 18 or over to apply for this role. 

Apprentice highways roadworker 

Have you ever thought about a career in Network Management and Construction? Do you want to work on exciting projects across the City? 

You will be working with a team of experienced Highways Operatives to carry out maintenance and construction duties, including laying paving, installing concrete, tarmac, and drainage. You will also learn to use and interpret plans and drawings in relation to highways functions. You will gain good understanding of health and safety and environmental requirements.

We will support you to achieve a Level 2 Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative apprenticeship qualification. We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this trade and are eager to learn. You will need GCSE grades 9 to 2 (A to E) in Maths and English or equivalent. 

Highways taster sessions 

Do you want to learn more about what it’s like to work in our Highways team? 

We are running taster sessions, where you can visit a working site, learn more about what it’s like to work in our Highways team, watch demonstrations, and take part in activities related to the role. 

The sessions will take place on:

  • Saturday 27 April 2024, 9am to 10.30am or 10.30am to midday
  • Saturday 4 May 2024, 9am to 10.30am and 10.30am to midday

Civil engineering apprentice 

Have you thought about the world around you – the streets, the buildings, the highways, the bridges? Do you want to be a part of transforming the way we live for generations to come? Is your career goal to become a qualified Civil Engineer?

Newcastle City Council’s Transport team are offering the opportunity to join our Civil Engineering Apprentice Programme to candidates who want to make a successful career in this discipline. Excellent on the job training will be given in disciplines such as highway design, bridge maintenance and design, traffic management and road safety and flood risk management as well as formal education in the form of day release to college or university.

We will support you to achieve a Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician apprenticeship with possible progression after successful completion of Level 3. We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this profession and are eager to learn. You will need at least five GCSEs at grade 9 to 4 (A* to C) or equivalent, including English and Mathematics or related BTEC qualification at Level 2. 

Business administration apprentice (Organisational Development) 

You will be working in our Organisational Development Team and provide support to our professional OD team of practitioners delivering our People Plan activity, employee support programmes, and supporting our Learning Management System. This may include providing advice and guidance to employees around our training and health and wellbeing programmes, assisting in the maintenance of our e-learning system, and supporting the team with organising events and training. 

We will support you to achieve a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship qualification. You will need grade 9 to 4 (A to C)  at GCSE Maths and English or equivalent. 

Apprentice plasterer 

You will work alongside one of our dedicated mentors who work in Repairs and Construction and deliver a service to over 26,000 homes within the City as well as public buildings such as schools. You will work on small-scale domestic jobs, large repair and restoration projects and on big commercial developments such as schools or hospitals. Apprentice plasterers will interact with commercial and domestic customers, other trades, architects, and site managers. You will be responsible for both solid plastering and fiborous plastering, work on your own and under supervision.

We will support you to achieve a Level 2 Plastering apprenticeship qualification. We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this trade and are eager to learn. You will need GCSE grades 9 to 2 (A to E) in Maths and English or equivalent. 

Apprentice joiner 

You will work alongside one of our dedicated mentors who work in Repairs and Construction and deliver a service to over 26,000 homes within the City as well as public buildings such as schools. You will get hands on experience in carpentry skills working with building materials (most often wood) to create and install building components. This typically involves shaping and cutting materials, installing finished materials like partitions, doors, staircases, window frames, mouldings, timber floor coverings and erecting structural components such as floor joists and roofs. 

We will support you to achieve a Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship qualification with possible progression onto a Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship after successful completion of Level 2.  We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this profession and are eager to learn. You will need GCSE grades 9 to 2 (A to E) in Maths and English or equivalent. 

Apprentice gas engineer 

You will get hands on experience to select, install, service and commission all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. You will interact with other construction trades such as bricklayers, plasterers and plumbers and will be responsible for working in a team and under supervision.

We will support you to achieve a Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating qualification. We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this trade and are eager to learn. You will need grade 9 to 4 (A to C) at GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.

Apprentice painter

You will support our Repairs and Construction Service.  You will get hands on experience and develop skills in painting and finishing. 

We will support you to achieve a Level 2 apprenticeship. We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this trade and are eager to learn. You will need GCSE grades  9 to 2 (A to E) in Maths and English or equivalent.
