Tower Crane

Apply for a licence to operate a tower crane over adopted highway.

Apply online for a licence to operate a crane on or over a public highway. You do not need a licence if you are erecting the crane on private land, and it will not sail over adopted highway.

If you intend to sail over land owned by us, you will need to contact our Property Systems team by email at pst@newcastle.gov.uk. You will need to get permission from the owners to over sail any other private properties.

The licence currently costs £1,285.21 (excluding VAT) for the agreed period, and it will take us around 20 weekdays to process your application.

It costs £250 (excluding VAT) to extend the duration of your application.

Transporting the Crane

Road Closures

If you need to close a road or restrict traffic movement, such as introducing a temporary one-way system, you will need to apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO). It takes us 12 weeks to process a TTRO.

Abnormal Loads

If the tower crane components meet the abnormal load criteria, you will need to notify us and Northumbria Police of the movement through National Highway’s Electronic Service Delivery for Abnormal Loads (ESDAL).
