Temporary Traffic Signals

You must apply online to place temporary traffic signals on the highway if you are not a statutory undertaker. 

It is free to apply to install temporary traffic signals, but you will be charged if we need to adjust or suspend existing permanent traffic signals. 

You must apply to suspend existing permanent traffic signals online. 

You need to give us notice before you can install temporary signals. The notice period depends on how long you want to place signals. 

If you need to install temporary traffic signals immediately, in response to an emergency that might pose a danger to life, you must call 0191 211 6403 and speak to our Permits team. Outside of normal working hours you must call 0191 278 78 78. 

You will also need to apply online in the usual way. 

Bus Stops 

You will need to contact Nexus by email at roadworks@nexus.org.uk if your works will need an existing bus stop to be suspended or temporary stops to be created. 

Road Closures 

If you need to close a road or restrict traffic movement, such as introducing a temporary one-way system, you will need to apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO). It takes us 12 weeks to process a TTRO.

• Affected streets
• Location plan
• Work dates and times
• Emergency contact details 

Next Steps 

We will notify you by email by the end of the notice period to confirm if your application has been approved or not. 

You will need to contact us by email as soon as practical if you want to amend the duration of your works.
