Bridges and Structures

We regularly inspect and maintain these highway structures, so they continue to be safe and functional: 

• Bridges
• Footbridges
• Subways
• Retaining walls
• Culverts 

You can report a problem with a structure online. You should call us on 0191 278 7878 and ask for bridges to report any issue you think might cause immediate danger. 

You must report a problem with street lighting online directly with our maintenance partner as we are unable to accept reports of faults. 

Retaining Walls 

A retaining wall is a structure built to hold back soil or rock and prevent it from sliding into a building, highway, or other area. They are made with various materials like concrete, stone, or brick. They are different to a boundary wall, like a wall around your garden, which do not hold earth in place.

Culverts 

A culvert is a structure that helps to prevent localised flooding by allowing water to flow under a road. These are usually made from concrete or metal. 

Bridges over the Tyne

We are responsible for these bridges over the Tyne, but not others:

• Tyne Bridge
• Swing Bridge
• Newburn Bridge
• High Level Bridge (road surface and lighting only)

To report an issue with another bridge over the Tyne, you must contact the relevant authority as we will be unable to help with your report.

Maintenance and Inspection

We complete general inspections every two years and a principal inspection every six years. These inspections help to identify any minor or emergency works that we need to do.

We do routine maintenance on structures to prolong their life and prevent more costly repairs. This includes things like:

• Removing vegetation
• Clearing drainage
• Repairing gap sealant at joints
• Checking fixings

We also make repairs to structures in response to wear and tear, accidents, or vandalism.
