Blocked Roadside Drains

Find out how to report a blocked roadside drain.

Roadside drains, or gullies, frequently get filled by natural debris and litter. This can lead to blockages. You can tell us about a blocked drain on the side of a public road.

We are not responsible for some roadside drains. You cannot report a problem with drains on private land. You can see which drains we maintain on our map of roadside drains.

Emergencies

You must call us immediately on 0191 228 7878 and ask for Your Local Services to report any missing service covers or drain grates as these may cause serious damage or injury.

Reporting a Problem

You will need to tell us a bit about the problem including the exact location, and you can upload a photo.

To help us identify and fix the problem as quickly as possible, you should be as specific as you can when telling us the location and nature of the fault.

You can use free tools like What3Words to tell us the location, or you can copy the gully ID from our map.

We will usually inspect the drain within 5 weekdays.

You should tell us a bit about the blockage. Such as:

  • causing surface flooding
  • blocked with earth
  • blocked with weeds and overgrowth
  • containing needles or broken glass
