An Adopted Highway is a highway, footpath, or footway that is maintained by us. You can report a problem on our roads, such as potholes or issues with traffic lights.
Some roads, such as private roads or those on a new development, may not have been adopted by us and we are not responsible for maintaining them. We can only maintain a road if it meets certain criteria, and the owner enters into a Section 38 agreement (Highways Act 1980) with us.
The A1, A696, and A69 are maintained by National Highways.
Other routes that are not adopted highway could be highway through use if the public have had continuous unobstructed access to pass over the area for at least 20 years. The landowner remains responsible for the maintenance.
This information, known as a highway search, is often used by solicitors and conveyancers in relation to buying and selling property or land. Developers, government, statutory undertakers such as utilities and telecoms, and the public often need this information.
Record Search
You can request a copy of a plan or a highway search. You will need to provide some information about the property location and pay a fee, starting from £25 (No VAT).
It will usually take up to 10 weekdays to complete your request.
