We are working to make transport and high street improvements to Adelaide Terrace and the surrounding area in Elswick. It is part of the regional North East Active Travel Programme, which is supported by £2.1m government funding from Active Travel England. Our High Streets team is also supporting the project by carrying out business engagement.
The project will:
- make it easier and safer to walk, wheel, and cycle
- make the high street more attractive
These changes include:
- improved pedestrian crossings - new signal controlled and zebra crossings will replace informal crossing points
- safer crossing at junctions for pedestrians and cyclists
- extending cycle lanes already existing on Benwell Lane and Elswick Road.
- closing Hugh Gardens to traffic
- new benches and planting
