Temporary Closure
You must apply online for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) to temporarily close a road or limit traffic movement for any planned works.
You can apply to close a carriageway for up to 18 months and footpath, bridleway, or Public Right of Way for up to 6 months.
Each application takes us 12 weeks to process and currently costs from £1,600 (No VAT). We cannot accept applications for works starting in fewer than 12 weeks.
Applying does not guarantee you will be granted permission to close the road. We will contact you once our engineers have assessed your application.
If the closure coincides with a Section 50 or Road Opening Notice, you should apply for these first.
You do not need to apply for a TTRO to install temporary traffic lights.
Urgent Short-term Closure
You must apply online for an Temporary Regulation Notice (TRN) to temporarily close a road immediately, for up to 21 days, in response to a situation which poses a risk to the public or risk of serious property damage. This might include a burst water main or collapsed structure. We issue this as an Emergency Traffic Regulation Notice (ETRN).
We will usually respond to your application within one weekday.
You can apply for TRN to request a road closure for up to 5 days for other urgent works in the coming 14 days which are not routine. This might include repairing a damaged sewer pipe, service cover, or damaged structure next to the highway. We issue this as Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice (TTRN).
These applications currently costs from £1,000 (No VAT).
Public Events
If you are planning an event on the highway, you will need to register your event with our events team before you can apply to close a road.
You will need to apply at least 12 weeks before the proposed event date and submit essential information such as an event safety plan and risk assessment. Go to our events page for more information.
You will need to include your event reference in your application to close a road.
You must apply online for a TTRO to close a road for a parade. However, as the process for processing the closure is different to other closures, the cost is currently from only £200 (No VAT).
Street Parties
You can close a road free of charge if you are organising an event for you and your neighbours. Go to our street parties page for more information.
Before You Apply
Before you start your application for a TTRO or TRN, you will need this information:
- A traffic management plan identifying:
- sections of highway to be closed
- proposed diversion route
- proposed signage
- Summary of why the order is needed
- The closure period
- Confirmation if the works will take place overnight
- Any exemptions such as:
- pedestrians
- cyclists
- emergency vehicles
- Contact details of the person responsible for works and customer services contact
- Confirmation that all workers installing the temporary traffic management are Lantra-certified.
