Our priorities

Find out about Newcastle City Council's public health priorities.

Focus on the building blocks of health - We’re improving health in Newcastle by tackling everyday things that affect people’s lives—like housing, jobs, food, mental health, planning, and climate. We work together across services to create fairer chances and better wellbeing for everyone.

Fair and Healthy Childhoods - We support children and families from pregnancy through school age. This includes health visiting, infant feeding, mental health support, and school wellbeing programmes—so every child gets the best start in life.

Quality Healthcare and Health Protection - We work with the NHS, social care, and community services to help people stay healthy for longer. This includes NHS Health Checks, sexual health services, stop smoking support, and screening programmes.

Harm Reduction and social inclusion - We work with local services, communities, and people with lived experience to reduce harm from drugs, alcohol, gambling, and violence. We support recovery, improve access to help, and promote safety using a public health approach.

Using Data and Research - Our Epidemiology and Intelligence team uses data and evidence to guide our work. This helps us focus resources where they’re needed most.

Health Equity and Engagement - We make health easier to understand and fairer for everyone in Newcastle. We do this by improving communication, involving communities, and making sure health is part of all local decisions.
