Selective Licensing
There are eight selective licensing areas are designated in the city.
All private rented properties within a selective licensing area require a licence unless otherwise exempt.
There are two areas of selective licensing which commenced in October 2021:
- Byker Old Town
- Greater High Cross

This scheme is due to end October 2026.
From April 2025 there is a new selective licensing scheme which will include:
- Cowgate
- West End Terraces
- Howdene Road, part of Howlett Hall Road, Ravenburn Gardens and part of Swinley Gardens (HHRS) in Benwell
- Lemington
- Denton Court
- Columbia Grange
