Personal Budgets for Adult Social Care

People who are eligible for Adult Social Care support, get a personal budget. This helps you to choose and pay for your own care and support.

After speaking to Adult Social Care at Newcastle City Council it will be decided if you can get money from the council to help pay for your care and support. Adult Social Care will help to guide you through this process.

Your personal budget is the amount of money that Adult Social Care has agreed to give you to help to pay for your care and support. Your budget may include money from other funding streams such as health.  The amount you receive each year may change. Your budget will be reviewed and agreed annually.

How to manage your personal budget

You can choose how to manage your personal budget. You can ask for one or a combination of these options:

  • Adult Social Care can arrange care and support services for you. We deal with the provider or providers on your behalf
  • An Individual Service Fund: Adult Social Care pays a provider to support you. This may only be available for some services. You decide with the provider how they will support you to achieve the outcomes in your plan
  • A direct payment, where a money is paid into your bank account to buy the support you need. You can also nominate a trusted person or pay an organisation to manage the direct payment for you.

What can you spend your personal budget on

Adult Social Care will work with you to create your Care and Support Plan. You will agree

  • the type of care and support you need
  • how your support will be given
  • how much money Adult Social Care will spend on your care
  • how much money you will pay towards your care
  • how your personal budget will be managed

You can use your personal budget to buy services such as:

Personal Budget reviews

A review will take place:

  • to confirm that your needs have been met
  • to update your care and support plan, normally annually
  • if you think that your care and support needs have changed
