When planning an event, you must carry out a risk assessment. This is the responsibility of the event organiser.
A risk is the chance that something harmful could happen, and how serious it would be. A hazard is anything that could cause harm – like a dangerous object, unsafe condition, or risky activity.
The aim of a risk assessment is to:
- find out what could go wrong
- look at how likely it is to happen
- decide how serious it could be
- explain how you will remove or reduce the risk
You’ll need to visit the event site to spot any hazards.
Things to think about in your risk assessment
These are some things you should think about in your risk assessment:
The event
- what kind of event it is
- where it’s happening
- when it’s happening
- how long it will last
The venue
- how many people it can hold
- how people will move around
- how people will get in and out, including in an emergency
- where emergency exits are
- what facilities are on site (like toilets or power)
- parking and transport
The people attending
- who is coming
Other things to consider
- noise levels and how you’ll manage them
- first aid and welfare/vulnerability
- clear signs around the site
A risk assessment is covered in the aplication form.
