Newcastle has been named among the world’s leading cities for climate change action for the 6th year running.

The city has retained its A-list status on international climate research institute CDP’s ranking of global cities.

The annual ranking scores cities based on their achievements and commitments towards creating a more sustainable future.

Newcastle was first included on CDP’s A list in 2020 and has retained the status ever since.

Cllr Juna Sathian, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport, said: “Building a resilient future for our city and setting the standard for environmental leadership are key priorities for us as a city.

“I’m proud that our commitment to protecting the future, and our communities, continues to be recognised by CDP, and I look forward to working closely with residents, partners, and stakeholders across Newcastle to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city.”

To score an ‘A’ grade rating, a city must disclose its climate action data publicly through CDP, have a city-wide emissions inventory, have set an emissions reduction target and have published a climate action plan.

It must also complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and have a climate adaptation plan to demonstrate how it will tackle climate hazards.
