Following the tragic news of Keegan’s death yesterday, the council will fly the Union flag at half-mast outside the Civic Centre from tomorrow (Wednesday) for the remainder of this week.
And a Book of Condolence will be available in the main reception, known as the Arches Reception, at the Civic Centre and another book at the City Library for fans to leave messages and memories of the legendary 75-year-old. The books will be at the Civic Centre from 8.30am tomorrow (Wednesday) until 4.30pm every week day this week and into early next week and at the City Library 10am to 5pm weekdays (7pm on Thursday) and 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
Cllr Colin Ferguson, leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “You don’t have to be a football fan to understand the impact that Kevin had on the city, at a time when it was needed the most.
“Kevin will forever be a hero to Newcastle United supporters, and football fans around the world, for his achievements on and off the pitch.
“Our thoughts go to his family, friends, and all those who admired and loved him.”
As a player, Kevin joined Newcastle United in 1982, spending two seasons at the club where he scored 48 goals in 78 games, ending his career on a high as he helped secure promotion back to the First Division before retiring.
He then returned to the Magpies as a manager in 1992 where he famously helped the club survive relegation to the then Third Division, and then winning the league title the following season as Newcastle United were promoted to the Premier League.
Thanks to his attacking play, his Entertainers as they became known came close to winning the Premier League in 1996 before he left the club in 1997.
After spells managing Fulham, Manchester City and England, Kevin briefly returned to manage Newcastle United in 2008.
The Book of Condolence will be at the Civic Centre for people to sign between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. The book at the City Library will be available 10am to 5pm, Monday to Wednesday and Friday, 10am to 7pm on Thursday and 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
