New proposals to improve walking, cycling and bus routes on a busy high street have been set out.
As part of the next phase of improvements for Gosforth High Street, these plans aim to improve road safety, create better public transport links and encourage walking and cycling.
Key proposals include some extensions to the north bound bus route on Great North Road, along with a package of active travel improvements such as upgraded cycle routes to and alongside the High Street, and a wider footway for people walking on Gosforth High Street.
Cllr Juna Sathian, cabinet member for climate and transport at Newcastle City Council said: “We’re now ready to unveil the next phase of improvements for Gosforth High Street and we invite feedback from local people to help shape the final designs. The team has been looking at different options for the High Street, which is part of one of the busiest routes for buses in the city, and how we can improve walking and cycling in the wider Gosforth area.
“With limited space, we’ve developed a set of measures that improve cycling connections, enhances spaces for walking, and make the area safer – particularly for the many school children who travel in this area daily.
“These proposals build on our ambitions to create a more sustainable city.”
The proposals include:
Public transport:
- A new section of north bound bus lane between Graham Park Road and Elmfield Road.
- Another new section of north bound bus lane between the Gosforth Hotel public house and Henry Street.
Pedestrian enhancements:
- Installing a new, signalised puffin crossing over the High Street on the stretch between Roseworth Avenue and Graham Park Road.
- A widened footway on the west side of High Street between Ivy Road and Woodbine Road
Cycling Enhancements:
- A new cycle lane along Christon Road.
- A segregated two-way cycle track on Great North Road between Hollywood Avenue and Christon Road.
- Introducing a cycle connection between Gosforth Central Park and the High Street along St Nicholas Avenue.
Traffic Management changes:
- Options to close Moorfield to vehicles near its intersection with Moor Road or close Moor Road at the Great North Road junction.
- Closing the junction of West Avenue and High Street to vehicles with an exemption for cycles.
The package builds on the bus priority measures made permanent last September and support the wider plans for the bus corridor improvements to the Great North Road, supporting more reliable bus services along one of Newcastle’s busiest routes.
