Newcastle has been named among the top-performing cities in the world for taking action against climate change for the fifth year in a row.
International climate research institute CDP has included Newcastle in its ‘A List’ which grades global cities for their achievements and commitment to leading the transition to a greener and more sustainable future.
Newcastle City Council was first named in the highest ranking of CDP’s publication in 2020 and has stayed there ever since.
Cllr Juna Sathian, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport, said: “Tackling climate change, future-proofing our city and leading by example when it comes to the environment are at the core of everything we stand for.
“I’m delighted that this unwavering commitment to ensuring we do all we can to safeguard our future continues to be recognised by CDP, and it gives me great confidence that we’re taking the right steps in the face of what is a global challenge.
“Our climate action aspirations are ambitious because that’s what they need to be to meet the threats presented by climate change, and I look forward to continuing to work with residents, partners and stakeholders across the city to deliver a cleaner, greener and more resilient Newcastle.”
To score an ‘A’ grade rating, a city must disclose its climate action data publicly through CDP, have a city-wide emissions inventory, have set an emissions reduction target and have published a climate action plan.
It must also complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and have a climate adaptation plan to demonstrate how it will tackle climate hazards.
