Newcastle Civic Centre is hosting an apprenticeship recruitment event to showcase the opportunities at Newcastle City Council.

We are pleased to confirm that the incident reported earlier today in Great Park has now been fully resolved, and residents can now to safely return to their homes.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that the device was a replica grenade and not viable as an explosive.

The safety and wellbeing of our residents is always our top priority, and we would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response in ensuring the safety of the community.

We understand this incident may have caused disruption, and we greatly appreciate the patience and cooperation of all affected residents.

We are currently working with partners to support residents evacuated from their homes as a precaution following the discovery of a potentially-explosive device.

Earlier today (30 May) Northumbria Police were called to Swinhoe Road at Newcastle Great Park following reports of a suspected explosive device discovered at a property.

Emergency services are on site and have implemented a precautionary cordon while awaiting an Explosive Ordinance Disposal team to attend the site. A number of homes have been evacuated as a result.

The council is supporting the emergency services and is implementing road closures in the area which may cause some local disruption.

We are also in the process of setting up a rest centre for displaced residents while the device is removed from the scene. This will be at Newcastle Racecourse at Gosforth Park. Any residents affected who need somewhere to go are invited to make their way there.

We appreciate this will be disruptive to residents impacted and will do all we can to facilitate their return to their homes as soon as it is safe to do so.
