Temporary diversions will be in place around Worswick Street, in Newcastle city centre, from next week (Jan 13).
The road, between Pilgrim Street and Carliol Square, will be fully closed to traffic in both directions to allow coordinated works by Newcastle City Council and Northern Powergrid to be completed safely.
These works include kerb works at the Worswick Street / Pilgrim Street junction and the installation of ducts at the Worswick Street / Carliol Square junction.
The temporary closure of Worswick Street will be in place from Monday 13 January and is expected to remain until Saturday 2 March.
During this time, signed diversions for vehicles will be in place and access to Carliol Square will be available via John Dobson Street and Carliol Street.
Access to Worswick Street for emergency services vehicles will be maintained whenever it is safe to do so.
Pedestrian access to Worswick Street will also be maintained and cyclists are advised to follow any signed diversion routes, or dismount and walk.
Cllr Juna Sathian, Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport at Newcastle City Council, said: “These works will enable us to complete the next stage of highways improvements in this part of the city centre.
“There’s a lot of development taking place on and around Pilgrim Street, including the development of the new HMRC building which will bring thousands of jobs into the city centre. Our highways and public realm improvements are an important part of the transformation of this area.
“Wherever possible we are coordinating our works with other partners on site to reduce disruption to people’s journeys.”
As part of the highways works, new paving, improved pedestrian crossing facilities and a new two-way cycle lane have been installed on Pilgrim Street between Market Street and Mosley Street.
Most of the remaining highways works are expected to be largely complete by March 2025, followed by overnight resurfacing work. Details on this will be confirmed closer to the time.
Final elements of the highways works will be carried out following the completion of work on neighbouring development sites.
