Newcastle is looking forward to welcoming Pride in the City, presented in partnership with NE1.

Under the theme of Unapologetically Visible, the event will bring tens of thousands of visitors to the city centre to celebrate the region’s vibrant LGBT+ community.

The annual main event is running from Friday 19 July until Sunday 21 July 2024 and has become a highlight of the city’s summer calendar.

It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the valuable impact this community has on society and the richness of their talents, whilst at the same time applauding their resilience at a time when they still face challenges as a community and individuals.

What's on

This year the festival favourites will be hosted at various locations and venues across the city centre, with the Northern Pride Arena located at Central Park in Times Square, with live performances from big names and local stars.

The annual Pride March leaves Newcastle’s Civic Centre at midday on Saturday 20 July and this year there will be the Market Village around the Monument and at Old Eldon Square, as well as numerous events taking place at different venues across the city centre.  A free hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus will help visitors to travel easily between the key festival zones.

Pride in the City comes to a close on Sunday night with the Candlelit Vigil from 9pm at Central Park following the final act. This will give those in attendance time for reflection and remembrance.

'A welcoming, diverse and fair city'

Cllr Nick Kemp, Leader of Newcastle City Council said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming Pride back this weekend, and excited that this year we will be celebrating Pride in the City, making it even more accessible and inclusive than before by bringing the events and other festivities into the city centre.

“Newcastle is a welcoming, diverse and fair city that is proud to share in each other’s identities.

"This event is one of the main highlights of the city’s calendar offering a vibrant and proud event and an opportunity for our LGBT+ community to celebrate the experiences and challenges they have overcome in a safe and supportive environment.”

Ste Dunn, Director of Northern Pride said: “This year’s theme of ‘Unapologetically Visible’ encompasses everything from theatre and street art to comedy and music, so there really is something for everyone to express themselves and find joy in the city.

"Our mission is clear and with every part of the festival we want to create as many different experiences and opportunities as possible to celebrate and highlight the vibrant and beautiful queer community, the valuable impact they have on society and the richness of their talents.

“This is also a fantastic opportunity to spread the Pride message across the city which in turn will also benefit the community and the local economy.

“I would like to thank Newcastle City Council and all of our partners and supporters for their ongoing commitment and for championing Northern Pride and Pride in the City.”

This year’s event is supported by the council and various partners including Creative Central NCL who, alongside Curious Arts have commissioned a selection of local artists to showcase their art as part of Pride in the City under this year’s theme, supporting independent artists, creative professionals and cultural organisations to thrive in central Newcastle.
