Thousands are expected to gather in Newcastle city centre this weekend to mark Remembrance Sunday.
A military parade and Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday 10 November as Newcastle prepares to pay its respects to all former and active servicemen and women.
The military parade will gather at the Civic Centre and form up on Blackett Street at approximately 10:45 ahead of the Service of Remembrance being held at the City War Memorial at Old Eldon Square.
The Bishop of Newcastle will lead the service from 10:58 before a gun signal marks the start of a two-minute silence. Following the service, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cllr Rob Higgins, and his party will make their way to the Saluting Dias at Grey’s Monument to take the salute as the military parade marches past.
Earlier in the day, the Lord Mayor will lay wreaths at the Renwick Memorial, The Burma Star Memorial, The Memorials to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and the South African War Memorial at Barras Bridge.
Cllr Rob Higgins said: “We all owe a debt of gratitude to service personnel past and present and Sunday presents us all with an opportunity to pay our respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation.
“All who have served our country in the past and continue to do so today deserve to be remembered, and I would invite as many people as possible to join us for this special commemoration.”
Cllr Linda Wright, Newcastle City Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “Conflict is something that is sadly part of our history and our present, and our armed forces have, throughout history, protected our way of life.
“I looking forward to joining thousands of others on Sunday to pay my respects and show that our fallen heroes and heroines will not be forgotten.”
A number of road closures will be in place on Sunday to facilitate the day’s proceedings. Short closures will be in place at Sandyford Road, St Mary’s Place, John Dobson Street, Percy Street and Northumberland Road.
