Long-serving ward member Cllr Rob Higgins has been appointed as the new Lord Mayor of Newcastle.
Cllr Higgins, who represents the Benwell and Scotswood ward, takes over as the city’s First Citizen from Veronica Dunn who stood down as a councillor prior to May’s local elections.
The Lord Mayor plays an important diplomatic role in the city by leading certain commemorative events and celebrations, hosting civic functions, representing the city at local events, welcoming visitors and chairing meetings of the council.
Having served as the Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor to Cllr Dunn, Cllr Higgins’ appointment was confirmed at the annual meeting of Newcastle City Council on Wednesday 22 May.
He said: “It is an honour and privilege to be entrusted with this prestigious civic role which gives me the enormous pride of being able to represent our great city.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the responsibilities and the duties that come with the role alongside Veronica these past 12 months, and wish her all the best as she takes a step back from frontline local politics.”
The appointment of Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor for 2024-25 was confirmed as Cllr Henry Gallagher, who represents the Dene and South Gosforth ward.
