A by-election will be held after one of Newcastle’s longest serving councillors stood down.

North Jesmond Liberal Democrat councillor Gerry Keating has resigned on health grounds.

A notice of vacancy has been published on the Council’s website, and an election to fill the vacancy will be held within 35 working days.

An outstanding record of public service

Gerry was first elected in May 1986 to Blakelaw ward and served until 2012.

He was then elected to North Jesmond in August 2014. He lost his seat in 2015 and was elected again to North Jesmond in May 2018.

He was on the council for a total of 32 years and 10 months.  He became an Alderman in November 2012.

Leader of Newcastle City Council, Cllr Nick Kemp, said: “Gerry’s record of public service has been outstanding.

"He has represented the people of this city diligently for more than 30 years making him one of our longest serving councillors.

“His anecdotes and characteristic dry sense of humour will be missed on all sides of the political divide in the council chamber, and I wish him all the very best.”
