Work to upgrade traffic signals at key city centre junctions in Newcastle is continuing from this week (the week beginning Monday 15 April).

The junction of Westgate Road and Clayton Street West is affected and drivers are advised that temporary traffic signals are in place.

Some changes to the road layout may also be needed during the works, including temporary banned turns and temporary lane or road closures.

This is expected to include the temporary closure of a section of Clayton Street, between Westgate Road and Fenkle Street. These temporary arrangements will only be used if unavoidable in order to carry out specific works on the carriageway and signed diversions will be in place.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Cyclists will be expected to follow any signed diversion route or dismount and walk along an adjacent footway.

Works are expected to last up to 10 weeks and will take place on weekdays between 8am and 4pm. This will include an upgrade of the traffic signals as well as associated paving works.

This is part of a wider programme of improvements aimed at improving key junctions in the city centre to help keep traffic flowing and public transport routes operating efficiently.

The wider programme, being carried out by Newcastle City Council and funded through the Transforming Cities Fund, is already under way, with improvements on Collingwood Street and Railway Street among those to be recently completed.
