Families have been shown first hand how keeping their communities clean offers their children opportunities for play.

Newcastle City Council worked with local people to litter pick and clean up streets and spaces around Ellesmere Road in Benwell, then invited local kids down for a day of sports and activities.

Cllr Irim Ali, the council’s Cabinet member for communities, said: “Keeping our streets and back lanes clean is everybody’s business, but we know that too often some of them are blighted by rubbish.

“By tidying up just this one small area we wanted to show local people that it not only makes it a nicer place to live, but can offer opportunities for activities, promoting health, community cohesion and deterring anti-social behaviour.

“Thank you to everyone who came down and took part - we hope they will be encouraged to both look after where they live and challenge others to do the same, ensuring the area around their homes is a safe and clean space for children to play and an attractive environment to live.”

The event was organised by Newcastle City Council’s Empowering People in Communities (EPiC) project, a part of its Better Lives, Safer Communities programme, which aims to bringing people together, help rebuild community spirit and tackle anti-social behaviour.

Northumbria Police and the council’s recycling engagement team also ran sessions to tell residents about the work they do in their community.
