Held as part of the nationwide Small Business Saturday campaign, the event recognised the outstanding contributions of local enterprises, with trophies presented by the Lord Mayor and Councillor Dan Greenhough, Cabinet Member for Economy, Jobs and Skills.
Now in its fifth year, the awards are a highlight of the national Small Business Saturday initiative, which champions the UK’s 5.5 million small businesses — a sector that represents 99.8% of the country’s business population. Locally, SMEs make up 89% of Newcastle’s business landscape, underscoring their vital role in the city’s economy.
This year’s awards were based on weeks of public voting, running from 4th to 24th November, with thousands of Newcastle residents casting their votes to honour the businesses that enrich their communities.
One standout business, Sheraz’s Westerhope Convenience Store, stole the spotlight, winning three categories, including the coveted title of Newcastle’s Favourite Small Business 2024.
Championing Local Heroes
Councillor Greenhough praised the city’s entrepreneurial spirit, stating:
“The People’s Choice Awards have become a local tradition, celebrating the small businesses that play a vital role in our economy. Every year, more people get involved, showing their support for the incredible work these businesses do in our communities. These awards are a wonderful way to recognise their hard work and highlight the important role they play in making Newcastle such a vibrant and welcoming city. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees — your efforts do not go unnoticed.”
He added:
“As we approach Small Business Saturday on 7th December, I want to encourage everyone to support our local businesses, not just on the day but throughout the year. They are the lifeblood of our local economy, providing jobs, unique services, and a sense of community that makes Newcastle a fantastic place to live and work.”
The Power of Small Businesses
The awards lead up to Small Business Saturday on 7th December, a day dedicated to supporting local enterprises. Last year, the campaign drove £1 billion in spending with small businesses across the UK, a testament to their critical role in sustaining both local economies and the broader national economy.
