Brunton First School is thrilled to announce the opening of its brand-new library, made possible by a generous £15,000 grant from the North East Combined Authority.
The library was officially opened by award-winning children’s author Katherine Rundell on Friday, 23rd November.
Mark Horsfall, Assistant Head Teacher, Brunton First School said “Our vision is to create a library where children see themselves and their families reflected in the stories they read. Reading is the foundation of all learning, and without this essential skill, children face significant challenges in reaching their full potential. We are proud to provide a space that not only nurtures a love for books but also becomes the beating heart of the school.”
Cllr Lesley Storey, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Newcastle City Council said: “It’s wonderful to hear that Brunton First School has created a new space designed to inspire a love of reading and celebrate diversity. Developing strong literacy skills is essential for a child’s growth and future success, and we hope every child enjoys this fantastic new library.”
Cllr Tracey Dixon, North East Combined Authority Cabinet Member for Education, inclusion and skills said: “This new library will be more than just a room filled with books—it’s will be a gateway to a world of possibilities for the children.
"Thanks to our Inspire small grants programme, we’ve helped the school to create a space that not only promotes reading but also feeds the children’s imaginations, curiosity, and a sense of belonging. I’m sure this new resource will empower the pupils to dream big and achieve their goals.”
The provision of the new library demonstrates the school’s commitment to fostering a lifelong love of learning and ensuring that reading is at the heart of everything they do. Designed as a welcoming and inspiring space, the library will provide children with a haven where books are celebrated, cultures are represented, and imaginations are free to roam.
The library features a diverse collection of books, including stories in various home languages, to ensure every child feels seen and represented. With its vibrant design and a focus on inclusivity, the space promises to inspire young minds to explore, dream, and embark on countless literary adventures.
