Library membership

Being a member of Newcastle Libraries gives you access to lots of different services for all ages.

  • take part in social groups and activities
  • use free WiFi in all libraries
  • get business advice at the Business and Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC)

Joining the library

Anyone can join the library for free. You can sign up online or at any library. 

Before signing up 

  • if you're aged 14 or over, you need to provide your full name, date of birth, and address
  • you don't need to show ID
  • children aged 13 and under can sign up in person with permission from a parent or guardian

After signing up

  • you will get an 8-digit membership number and a 4-digit PIN
  • your library membership lasts for one year
  • your membership is just for you, so don't let anyone else use it
  • you can change your pin and email address on your library account portal on Discover Newcastle Libraries.
  • if you need to change your address before your account is up for renewal, contact us on 0191 287 7878 and ask for libraries
  • use the find a library tool to check when your local library is open

Renewing your library membership 

You can renew your membership online or in person at a library. You will need to confirm your details so our records are up to date. We need to see proof of name as soon as possible. 

Library membership lasts for one year. We will email you a reminder when your membership is about to expire.
