Clair Riley - Health and social care apprentice

"It was the best thing I ever did"

Introduction

"I started the apprenticeship in April 2021, and I finished the apprenticeship in October 2022 where I became a permanent member of staff at Welford centre."

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

"A typical day for me would be coming in and ensuring the service users are settled, ensuring I know all the care plans for everybody because people in Welford Centre are complex needs, so you need to make sure you know everything about the moving and handling and all that kind of thing, and it’s about giving them a little bit of exercise too, and helping them; Enjoying things as well, so we have an arts and crafts recovery room. We do things like rebound which is on the trampoline. We’ve got loads of different activities going on in the centre."

What do you enjoy most about your job?

"I love the service users, I love being able to help them, and most of all I love getting a smile out of their faces."

What advice would you give others who are thinking of applying for an apprenticeship or a career in Social Care?

"Being transparent, open, and honest, being caring, being passionate about what I do as well. If you don’t enjoy your job, you’re not going to do it to the best of your abilities.

"Don’t worry about an age barrier, I’m older and I did it and it was the best thing I ever did."
