Your rent is charged weekly, on a Monday, to your account. Payments should be made in advance of the rent being due.
If you want to pay over a longer period (for example fortnightly, four weekly, or monthly) you must contact us to arrange that.
If you have any questions about your rent account, get in touch and we will:
- offer you a confidential interview
- respond to any queries
- give you details about your account, including the balance if you need it
If you are having problems paying your rent it is very important that you contact us so that we can offer you help and support.
View and keep track of your rent account and statements
Every thirteen weeks we will send you a rent statement summarising transactions that have taken place on your account during that period.
If you require an up to date statement at any other time:
- use the My Account system online
- contact your local Housing Office, who will post one out to you
New customers can register using the same link.
To successfully register you will need to have:
- Your Payment Reference Number - This can be found either on your swipe card or rent statement. Leaseholders can find their reference number on their service charge invoice.
- Date of Birth
Ways to pay
We offer a number of methods to help make it as easy and convenient as possible for you to make a payment.
Online
Pay your rent or service charges online
It’s quick and easy to pay your rent or service charges online. You will need:
- your credit or debit card (we do not accept American Express, JCB or Diners Club cards)
- your reference number or invoice
The cardholder must be present during the transaction
Direct debit
Paying by direct is easier for you and reduces our collection costs, making our service more efficient and cost effective.
Paying by Direct debit means there's:
- no waiting in queues to pay your rent
- no cheques to write
- no paperwork or postage every month
If you have a a current account with a bank or building society, or certain types of deposit account, you can set up a Direct Debit by:
If you pay by Direct Debit you can choose what date and how often your payments are made, so you could ask for the money to leave your account just after you receive your wages or benefits.
We will then:
- take payment on or immediately after the date you have chosen, with money credited to your account the same day
- not change date without your prior agreement
- tell you at least 10 working days in advance if the amount changes
If for any reason we or your bank or building society make an error we guarantee you a full and immediate refund.
And if you want to cancel your Direct Debit you can do so by simply writing to your bank or building society cancelling the instruction, then sending us a copy.
Universal Credit
If you are entitled to receive Universal Credit then you can apply to have your rent payments made directly to us.

Post Office or PayPoint
You can still pay your YHN rent and service charges in person at any Post Office or PayPoint outlet. To do this you need:
- A swipe card or
- The barcode on your letter or ticket.
To request a new or replacement swipe card, contact our Income team on 0191 278 8600or use our online form.
Over the phone
Payments can be made by calling 0191 278 7878. Please follow the telephone instructions below:
- Step 1: When prompted say ‘payments’
- Step 2: When prompted say the type of payment you wish to make e.g. 'rent' and continue to follow the payment instructions.
You must ensure that you have your 11 digit reference number and a valid debit or credit card.
Your nearest YHN Housing Services office can confirm your 11 digit reference number.
Please note: We do not accept American Express, JCB or Diners Club cards.

Please remember to write your payment reference number and address on the back of the cheque and what the payment is for, for example 'Rent'.
