Context

There was a need to explore how different parts of the children’s social care system in Newcastle interact, and how it may be perceived differently by key groups who experience the system on the ground every day.

Action

The research team ran four participatory systems‑mapping workshops. To ensure lived experiences were included from a wide range of people, participants ranged from professionals to care-experienced young people. Miro boards were used to map a young person’s journey through the care system. The discussions were transcribed and analysed thematically, leading to a detailed report and a shorter summary, with tailored recommendations.

Result

The work produced valuable insights which aim to shape policy. The participatory methods approach was well received and is now being used in other contexts, such as team planning and project design.
