Context:
Local government reports contain valuable insights about public health priorities, but manually reviewing them is time‑consuming and inconsistent. With generative AI rapidly advancing, there is an opportunity to automate how we extract and interpret this information.
Action:
Dr Wasim Iqbal developed a generative AI approach that analyses open‑access council reports, identifies key health themes - such as references to the Marmot Principles - and classifies topics, keywords and patterns. This work was carried out in partnership with the Public Health Directorate.
Result:
The system enables the council to produce clear statistics showing how well reports address specific health issues or policies over time, supporting more informed public health assessments and strategic planning.
