Getting a refund

If you have overpaid on your council tax account, we will check to make sure that the credit is correct. We may use the credit to reduce the balance on any other debts you have outstanding with the council.

Any overpayment will be automatically refunded into your bank account if:

  • you pay by Direct Debit, and
  • have moved out of the area, or,
  • you are no longer responsible for council tax at another property in the area, or,
  • your council tax account has closed.

Alternatively, we will issue a credit notice so that you can claim a refund.

The quickest, safest and easiest way to have your refund paid is directly into your bank account. So, it would be helpful if you have your bank account details at hand before you complete the form below.

Joint liability

You may be jointly and severally liable for council tax but don't hold a joint bank account. If that's the case, you can request to have the refund paid to only one named person on the bill.

To do this, all liable parties must provide written authorisation of their agreement to this. They should email council.tax@newcastle.gov.uk, stating the 12 digit reference number and add title 'Refund' to the subject field.

To help speed up the process, make sure that:

  • the person who's bank account will get the credit has submitted a refund form
  • all other liable parties have given written authorisation by emailing council.tax@newcastle.gov.uk to agree the credit is paid to that person.
