Council tax explained

Council tax is a system of local taxation collected by local authorities. It is a tax on domestic properties.

You will need to pay council tax in Newcastle City area if you;

• are aged 18 or over and,
• live in a property,
• own a property,
• have an active tenancy.

You will not have to pay council tax if;

• you qualify for an exemption
• your landlord or the owner of the property should be responsible

The council use the income collected from council tax to fund essential services.
