Overview

Council tax is a system of local taxation collected by local authorities. It is a tax on domestic properties.

If you are 18 years or over and live in, own or have an active tenancy at a home in the Newcastle City area, you will need to pay council tax, unless:

  • you are exempt from paying council tax
  • your landlord or the owner of the property should be responsible

The council will use the income raised through the collection of council tax to fund essential services.
