Council tax discounts and exemptions

How to reduce the council tax on a property you live in, including discounts, disregards and exemptions.

Single person discount

Apply for a single person discount if you are the only person over 18 years of age that lives in your property. You can also advise us here if you no longer qualify for the discount.

Disabled band reduction

Homes that have been adapted for a resident disabled person may be entitled to a disabled band reduction. This means that council tax will be calculated one band lower than it would normally be.

Severely mentally impaired

You may get a reduction if someone age 18 or over lives with you and is severely mentally disabled. If you are the only occupier in your home and you are severely mentally impaired, you may qualify for an exemption.

Care leavers reduction

If you’re aged between 18 and 25, and you have recently moved from local authority care, you may be entitled to receive some help with your council tax.

Carers disregard and exemptions

If someone in your household provides care or support (or both) to another person in your home, they may be disregarded from council tax. You could also qualify for an exemption from council tax if you have vacated your home to provide or receive care. 

Council tax for students

You may qualify for a discount or exemption on your council tax if you or the other people in your property are students. You will need to meet certain criteria to qualify.

Empty properties

Report a change of ownership or find out information on the discounts and exemptions available if a property you own is empty. Information is also available on charges that are applied on second homes and long term empty properties.
