Upcoming elections

Future council, UK parliamentary, mayoral and police and crime commissioner elections affecting Newcastle.

Council elections

Newcastle has 78 council seats split across 26 areas, known as wards.

Voters in the city usually go to the polls to elect Newcastle City Council councillors in three out of every four years.

At each election one third of the seats are usually being contested.

However, due to boundary changes, at our most recent election in May 2026 we saw all 78 seats available.

From 2027 we will return to our usual three year cycle. The councillor elected in each ward who received the least votes in 2026 will be up for election first.

Our next council elections will take place on:

  • 6 May 2027
  • 4 May 2028
  • 2 May 2030
