Youth Climate Summit

Newcastle's Youth Climate Summit allows young people to support the city's mission.
Experts from a range of organisations were among previous attendees of the summit. They delivered interactive workshops on the carbon reduction work in the city.

To date we have hosted four Youth Climate Summits in Newcastle:

Green careers guide

The Council has published a green careers guide. This showcases green career opportunities available to young people in the North East.

Alongside this we have developed a green careers lesson plan for schools in the city. Within the lesson resource is a video developed by our Youth Council explaining what green jobs are and the benefits of having one.

Youth Council

The Youth Council and Youth Parliament are organised by Newcastle City Council. They give young people a chance to experience local democracy in a non-political way.

They are able to experience the excitement of elections and voting within the city.

The Youth Council have been heavily involved in engagement plans with the Net Zero team including organising our Youth Climate Summit, creating the Green Careers video and hosting our Net Zero Heroes Event for primary schools.

Net Zero Hero Initiative

We ran our first Net Zero Heroes Event in November 2024. This was for local Primary schools to come together and learn about climate change.

We welcomed 150 children to the Civic Centre from 25 schools. We also welcomed 10 local organisations who work with schools on climate action to help on the day.

The event celebrated some of the great work schools are doing on sustainability. We awarded three schools with the Net Zero Hero Initiative Award.  These inspiring projects ranged from an eco classroom to an eco-garden.

Thank you to our Net Zero Heroes for all their great work and commitment to the planet.

Eco programmes

We are working with key local groups that support schools on sustainability.

We have worked with OASES, a group that runs a programme supporting schools on climate action. The regional authority is funding 10 Newcastle schools for this programme. We have worked with the chosen schools to support this.

Newcastle City Council is also funding schools for the Young Green Britain Challenge. This educates and inspires students about climate change solutions. The winning team from each school will go to London to present their idea.

We are continuing to work with other groups such as Nature Parks and Let's Go Zero. We are also guiding schools on the support available.
