Our progress

We have made significant progress in reducing our carbon emissions.

The following pages explain the various areas of work underway to make Newcastle a sustainable city.

Energy

Energy is essential for our city. It provides heat for our homes and workplaces, powers our transport and keeps our healthcare system running. It also acts as the biggest contributor to our city-wide emissions.

64% of all emissions come from our energy use in domestic and non-domestic properties.

Transport

Transport enables the movement of people and goods in the city. It can also support economic growth, and provide employment for city residents.

Transport in the city contributes to approximately 29% of Newcastle’s emissions

Sustainability

Sustainability underpins all our work. Our city's aim is to limit our consumption and protect our natural environment.

Activities associated with waste, food and water contribute to the remaining 7% of Newcastle’s emissions.
