We receive a high volume of business rates data requests. So that we can reduce the number of requests processed we are now making the data available. The information will be available quarterly.
We also receive requests for individual ratepayers and occupancy of commercial properties. These requests are no longer dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act and should be forwarded directly to business.rates@newcastle.gov.uk to review.
After careful consideration we have decided not to provide a breakdown of amounts owing to ratepayers where the business rates account is in credit. We believe that by releasing this information there are a number of avenues by which the credits can be fraudulently claimed.
The council is exempt from disclosure of this information as it could prejudice the prevention or detection of crime.
