How council tax contributes to our budget

Council tax applies to domestic properties and it is paid by residents or owners. The amount you pay is based on the value of the property, at 1991 prices.

Council tax is just 21 percent of our total income. In 2023 to 2024 council tax is expected to raise £131.8 million towards the cost of providing services to our communities.

Where your council tax goes

Your council tax bill provides funding for more than just the council - Some of it also goes to pay for Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue.
