Context

Seven members of the Newcastle Youth Panel took part in HDRC research training at the Civic Centre on 29 June 2026. The session helped them develop practical research and discussion-leading skills while contributing to the design of an evaluation of the Better Lives Safer Communities Youth Hub programme.

Action

Young people developed skills in leading activities and discussions with children aged 5–11. They helped shape the Youth Hub evaluation by refining focus group activities, improving survey questions and suggesting inclusive ways to involve younger children. They also contributed ideas on creating safe spaces and practised leading discussions.

Result

The session showed the value of involving young people as active partners in research, helping ensure that activities reflect the priorities and experiences of children and young people. It supports HDRC Newcastle's goal of building research skills and knowledge across the Council and local communities and provides a model for youth-led research. Going forward, participants will continue their involvement in the evaluation as peer facilitators, supporting the gathering of information and feedback, reviewing findings, and developing inclusive engagement approaches, including for young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).
