Context
As HDRC Newcastle seeks to increase the use of Newcastle City Council data for research into health inequalities and prevention, it was important to understand public attitudes towards how routinely collected council data is used and what is needed to build trust.
Action
In November 2025, HDRC Newcastle hosted a workshop at Newcastle City Library, bringing together residents and representatives from VCSE organisations to discuss their views, concerns and expectations around the use of council data for research. The discussions explored issues such as transparency, privacy, public involvement and demonstrating impact.
Result
The workshop produced nine key recommendations that define good practice for the use of council data in research. These insights are now informing HDRC Newcastle’s approach, helping to ensure research is more transparent, trustworthy and focused on delivering meaningful improvements for communities across the city.
