Context
A research idea focused on preventing young people becoming Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) emerged from HDRC Newcastle's ‘Connecting People, Connecting Ideas’ events in March 2026.

Action
HDRC Newcastle has coordinated the development of this idea by bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers and community partners through a dedicated NEET Research Interest Group (RIG). The RIG provides a forum to share knowledge, discuss local challenges, identify evidence gaps and explore opportunities for collaborative research to better understand and prevent NEET outcomes.

Result
The RIG has established a growing cross-sector network committed to improving understanding of the factors that contribute to young people becoming NEET and has started to identify key research priorities and areas where further evidence is needed.
