Who can correct a death registration

You can apply to correct a death registration if you are: 

  • a relative of the person who died 
  • someone who would have been able to register the death

If you are not the person who originally registered the death

If you did not originally register the death, you must provide a letter from the person who did. This letter must confirm they agree to the correction. If you do not provide this, your application may take longer to process.

The letter should contain their name, address and a contact telephone number and/or email address. We also require documentary evidence of your relationship to the person shown on the original entry.

You must show that the information was wrong at the time of registration. GOV.UK explains what evidence you need and how to apply.

Correction fees

You will need to pay a fee for any correction. Check the current fees for making a change to a registration.

Completed applications should be returned to Newcastle Register Office.

Correct a death registration following a coroner's inquest

This guidance will not apply if you want to correct a death registration which was originally registered following a coroner's inquest. For advice, contact the Register Office.

After you apply

We will check your application to see if the correction can be made locally or needs approval from the General Register Office (GRO).

If your correction can be processed by Newcastle Register Office, we will contact you to arrange an appointment. We will tell you which documents to bring and confirm the fee before your visit.

If your application needs approval from the General Register Office (GRO), we will explain the next steps and collect the fee. We will then send your application to the GRO on your behalf.
