If you do not bring the required documentation, or do not meet the residency or other requirements, then the notice appointment will not be able to go ahead and you will need to book another. All documents provided must be originals.

When giving notice, you will need to pay a fee

Proof of name, age and nationality

When giving notice of marriage you will need to bring your:

  • full birth certificate

You will also need evidence of your name, age and nationality. That could be a current valid:

  • passport
  • Home Office travel document

If you do not have a passport

If you were born in the United Kingdom on or before 31 December 1982

British citizens who do not have a valid passport should provide a:

  • full British birth certificate, 
  • evidence showing you are currently using your birth name and surname

If you were born in the United Kingdom after 1 January 1983

If you were born in the United Kingdom after 1 January 1983 and do not have a British or Irish passport, you also need to bring evidence of either:

  • one of your parent's British citizenship
  • their settled status in the UK at the time of your birth

This could be their full birth certificate or passport.

If your parents were married at that time and your mother was not British then we also need to see their marriage certificate. If your parents were not married to each other at the time of your birth, your nationality will be that of your mother, so you must bring her documents.

Proof of address

To prove your address, please bring one of the following:

  • a council tax bill from the last 12 months
  • a valid UK driving licence (full or provisional)
  • a gas, water or electricity bill from the last 3 months
  • a bank or building society statement from the last month

If you do not have those documents, you may also be able to provide:

  • a letter from the owner of where you live

In that letter they must confirm:

  • your name
  • your address
  • how long you have lived there
  • their name
  • their address their
  • contact email or telephone number

Residency requirement

If you are completing the 8 day residency requirement you will need to provide:

  • a letter confirming the date you moved in

Where you are living must be within the Newcastle upon Tyne registration district. The person writing the letter must provide their:

  • name
  • address
  • contact details

Proof of immigration status

If you are not a British citizen you should also provide proof of your immigration status.

This could be a:

  • European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) settled status, EUSS pre-settled status or a pending EUSS application
  • biometric residence permit (if you are not from the European Economic Area)
  • UK visa or entry clearance in your passport
  • Home Office endorsement in your passport (including an indefinite leave to remain vignette, right of abode certificate or certificate of entitlement)
  • UK residence permit in your passport
  • Immigration status document endorsed with a vignette showing your photograph
  • UK armed forces ID card

European Settlement Scheme (EUSS)

If you have EUSS settled status, pre settled status or have a pending application to the EUSS, please bring a current and valid passport. If either of you are not a British or Irish citizen, please also bring evidence of your settled status, pre-settled status or a pending application to the EUSS.

Your share code

You will be asked to confirm which document you used in your application and then to confirm the details of the document and your date of birth. After completing the GOV.UK process you will be emailed the share code.

You must bring your share code to your notice appointment. The share code is only valid for 30 days.

If any documents are not in English, you will need to get a full written English translation.

If you or your partner are subject to immigration control

In addition to the documents listed above, you will need to bring:  

  • a passport sized photo for each of you (even if only one of you from outside the UK) 
  • proof of your current immigration status (for example, your visa) 
  • a translation of any documents that are not in English
  • a debit or credit card, to pay a fee of £12 per person

Your marriage schedule will be issued a minimum of 28 days after giving your notice, or if you are subject to immigration control between 28 and 70 days subject to the Home Office.
