Couples who registered their same-sex civil partnership in England and Wales can convert it to a marriage.

You’ll get a marriage certificate, dated when your civil partnership was formed.
You cannot convert an opposite-sex civil partnership to a marriage in England and Wales.

What you need to do
To convert a civil partnership into a marriage in Newcastle you need to:
- attend an appointment at a Newcastle Register Office
- complete a declaration with details about you and your civil partnership
You will also need to provide documents, including:
- proof of name and your date of birth (a current passport or birth certificate)
- proof of address (a recent council tax or utility bill)
- an original civil partnership certificate
You can choose to say the declaration aloud to each other before signing the conversion document.
Your marriage is then registered and a marriage certificate issued.
Converting with a ceremony
You can also convert a civil partnership to a marriage and have a ceremony.
This is a two stage process where you will:
- attend an appointment at Newcastle Register Office to complete your declaration
- hold a ceremony where you will sign the declaration
The ceremony can be held at:
- a venue where same sex couples are able to marry
Once you have signed the declaration at the ceremony, your marriage is registered and a marriage certificate is issued.
After the ceremony you can get your certificate by:
- collecting it from Newcastle Register Office
- requesting it is posted to you
