Correct a marriage or civil partnership registration

You can change a marriage or civil partnership registration if it is incorrect. You must start your application on GOV.UK.

Who can apply

Either person named on the marriage or civil partnership can apply to correct it. 

Both people must know about the correction. 

We cannot correct the registration if both people have died.

Corrections requested more than 5 years after the marriage

From 4 May 2021, the law changed.

Corrections requested more than 5 years after the marriage date are automatically charged the correction fee.

You must show that the information was wrong when the marriage or civil partnership was registered.

Fees

There is a fee to correct a registration. The cost depends on:

  • the type of correction
  • how long after the marriage the correction is requested

How to get and return the application form

You must apply through GOV.UK.

The application form is available online. You need to download and print it. 

Applications cannot be submitted online.

Once you have completed the form, send it by post to:

You must include:

  • the completed application form 
  • the required evidence 

Do not include payment unless we ask you to. We will tell you if a fee applies and how to pay once we have checked your application.

What happens after you apply

When we receive your application, we check how the correction will be handled.

You do not need to work out which route applies to you, we will do this for you.

Corrections handled by Newcastle Register Office

We will contact you to: 

  • arrange an appointment 
  • tell you which documents to bring 
  • confirm the fee

Corrections checked by the General Register Office

Some corrections must be checked by the General Register Office (GRO). When this applies, we will: 

  • contact you to explain the next steps 
  • take payment for the correction 
  • send the application to the GRO on your behalf
